For a long time, people have debated whether or not to allow the legalization of recreational marijuana use for adults. Nonetheless, current events in the Minnesota legislature suggest that adult-use legalization may soon be on the horizon in Minnesota, suggesting that a resolution in the state may be near.
A bill to legalize recreational Marijuana usage for adults in Minnesota was passed by the legislature in 2021 when it was controlled by the Democratic Farm Labor (“DFL”). Unfortunately, the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate declined to take hearings on the bill, effectively killing it at the end of the 92nd Legislative Session.
More bills will likely make it through the Minnesota legislature and into law when the 93rd Legislative Session begins in January. These better odds are a result of the 2022 election, in which the DFL gained control of the state senate while keeping control of the state house and the governor’s mansion.
Multiple elected figures, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have made it clear since the election that legalizing recreational cannabis will be a key priority in the upcoming legislative session. The Senate may use the 2021 law as a template for the 2023 bill that is expected to be filed along similar lines.
