The addition of a local tax on marijuana sales will be put to the vote of the citizens of Carthage. Members of the city council agreed to put a resolution addressing the problem on the April ballot. On retail marijuana sales for adult use within city borders, a 3% tax would be applied.
The 6% tax that the state’s voters passed last November when they legalized recreational usage would be in addition to that. In Carthage, there is presently only one dispensary that has a license to sell medical marijuana.
However, according to city officials, this number may increase, therefore they want to be ready in case an increase in demand for local services results. For the cities, it serves as an incentive.
With these new enterprises moving into the area, you can be sure that some changes will need to be made. Additionally, you never know what kind of infrastructure, police, or fire protection they may require. On the ballot on the 4th of April is a question about taxes.
