Marijuana Legalization Has Generated Almost 30,000 Employment in Illinois Since 2020!

More than 30,000 new jobs have been created in Illinois, according to the state’s governor, all thanks to the legal marijuana industry. Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) mentioned the job growth during his State of the State and Budget address on Wednesday, praising Illinois as the location of “the country’s most diverse cannabis industry and some of the largest corporations.”

Among the “big enterprises” relocating to and expanding in Illinois, he included marijuana firm 4Front. In Illinois, the economy has benefited from legalization in several ways. A report from last month indicated that in 2022, sales of cannabis in the state topped $1.5 billion.

More than a hundred dispensaries have opened in the state, and the administration is proud of the three social equity licensees that were allowed just last year after a long fight for them to begin achieving equity targets. In August of the calendar year 2022, the state finally hit $1 billion, two months sooner than in 2021.

State marijuana sales and tax income for the 2022 Fiscal Year were both highlighted by Pritzker last year. Tax revenue in Illinois totaled $445,3 million on $1.5 billion in cannabis sales. When compared to the previous fiscal year, this is an increase in cannabis tax revenue of 50%.

Officials recognize, however, that more must be done. A report published in September by state regulators highlighted a severe lack of diversity among the owners of businesses serving the adult-use marijuana sector.

In addition, it detailed a strategy to begin reversing that trend in the current fiscal year, when roughly 200 new social equity enterprises are expected to enter the market. The state’s legalization law requires that a certain percentage of tax revenue from the marijuana industry be invested back into the communities that supported its passage.

The governor and other state authorities have reaffirmed their dedication to this goal. Officials in Illinois stated last year that $45 million in grants would be awarded using revenue from the state’s legal marijuana industry to aid in the reinvestment of communities “hardest impacted by the failed war on drugs.”

As a result, the state’s Restore, Reinvest, and Renew (R3) program received its second installment of cash in accordance with the adult-use cannabis legalization law in Illinois. Funds from the legalization of cannabis in the state will be used to support intervention programs in high-crime areas in an effort to reduce violence by 2021, with an allocated budget of $3.5 million.

In 2020, the governor revealed that his administration had processed more than 500,000 expungements and pardons for persons with low-level cannabis crimes on their records and that these funds will be used to reinvest in local communities.

Legislation enacted by Pritzker last year ensures that a positive drug test for marijuana will not be grounds for a judge to reject a request to erase or seal a person’s record. To further aid citizens who have been convicted of marijuana-related offenses, the state government has launched a program to provide them with the resources they need to successfully cleanse their records.
